Put Away Your Sword & Grab Your Net Part 4

This powerful message challenges us to shift from living by the sword to living by the net—a profound metaphor drawn from Peter's encounter with Jesus. When Peter drew his sword to defend Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was acting on instinct, waiting for the opportune moment to strike. But Jesus reminded him of his true calling: not to be a slayer of men, but a fisher of men. The sword represents our tendency to wait for perfect moments, to be opportunistic in our faith, and to make quick, impactful strikes when conditions seem right. The net, however, represents something far more powerful: importunity—persistent, consistent, urgent faith that doesn't wait for ideal circumstances. Drawing from 2 Timothy 4:2, we're called to preach the word in season and out of season, to be ready whether it's convenient or not. The parable of the dragnet in Matthew 13 reminds us that our job isn't to judge who's worthy—that's the angels' work. Our job is to cast the net wide, gathering fish of every kind.
